Read our new article on the Canadian Business Council of Dubai and the Northern Emirates online magazine. Full magazine can be accessed here: https://www.canva.com/design/DAFHgVs_G7Y/VqTEaxVDh0d2vLKiHAOz9w/view#1 While most people have heard of the Metaverse, it still seems a rather abstract notion, as George Lucas would put it: in a galaxy far-far away. When Facebook, now Meta, presented the Metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg talked about a vision, a future virtual world where we can connect with others using VR headsets, work, join concerts, shop, travel and more. What he did not mention, is that the Metaverse is here already, it has been for a while and VR sets are not a must to access it. Here are 3 solid reasons why you should get on the Metaverse bandwagon now. 1. THE METAVERSE HAS OVER HALF A BILLION MONTHLY ACTIVE USERS I am not joking. Many don’t know this, but Metaverses have been here for quite some time, found especially in the form of elaborate online games. Metaverses like Fortnite, Roblox, Sandbox, Decentraland, Minecraft are beaming with young active users that have a digital social persona, so called avatars, that live in these worlds, socialize, adopt pets, dress following the latest trends, join events, build houses, play games and so much more. Brands have caught on this new way of social engagement as well and have started offering new and exciting ways to interact and create memorable experiences, hoping to build brand affinity early on and reap the benefits in the years to come. I will let the numbers speak for themselves: Roblox has >200 million monthly active users. 67% of Roblox users are under the age of 16. Source: https://backlinko.com/roblox-users There are over 350 million registered Fortnite players. Around 85% of Fortnite players are aged 18 to 35. Source: https://explodingtopics.com/blog/fortnite-stats Minecraft has >141 million active monthly players. The average Minecraft player is a 24-year-old male. Up to 54% of boys aged 3 to 12 play Minecraft compared to only 32% of girls. Source: https://webtribunal.net/blog/minecraft-statistics/#gref 2. YOUR FUTURE CUSTOMERS ARE IN THE METAVERSE TODAY The Metaverse is dominated by young boys and girls (as young as 3 years old based on some stats on Minecraft, all the way to teenage years). These kids are growing up online, but not on social media as older consumers do. The younger generation is found playing and socializing in virtual worlds. What does this mean for a business owner or a brand? 1. Young consumers influence purchases within their household already 2. Teenagers will join the workforce and start having purchasing power in a few years’ time 3. Boys and girls grow up interacting online differently than your current consumer base; the media and messaging that works today, will not be relevant to them; they expect brands to talk to them on their own terms 3. IT’S STILL CHEAP TO LEARN 10 years ago, when social media was created, adoption moved swiftly and those who got a head start, managed to build thriving businesses. Today the Metaverse is developing exponentially, and what social media did in 10 years, the Metaverse will do in a mere couple of years. But don’t fret, it’s still cheap to fail. This is the time to learn, test, pilot, pivot. The costs are still low. Why test? As I mentioned above, the audience in the Metaverse is young, talks a different language, follows different rules of engagement. While the 30+ year old consumers have social media accounts and are used to scrolling feeds and seeing ads, or using the “skip” button on Youtube, the younger generation interacts with the online world completely differently. For them online means virtual worlds and friends, where they get to do all sorts of things that are not accessible to them in the real world (yet), they take responsibility for a pet, build a house, fight off creepers and mobs, dress to impress, make new friends, express their personality and opinions in exciting and whimsical places. The virtual world is much more than just a spectator game, where you sometimes like, share, comment on posts; it’s a space of fun, entertainment, learning. Brands and businesses need to find their voice in this space and learn how to get noticed. Wondering where to start?
